Argo article-(http://www.okgazette.com/oklahoma/article-16587-argo.html).
This article is an analysis of the film 'Argo' (directed by Ben Affleck), which is a thriller about a real, top secret C.I.A mission. The article identifies that this film is a thriller (which is one of the reasons why I chose this article), furthermore the article provides the user with some of the techniques that are used to create the film. I discovered that this information is extremely useful, the techniques that are used to create the film could potentially be replicated. Therefore I am going to use some of the techniques in my short opening sequence. The article also focuses on reviewing the film, which isnt completely relevant in relation to my task. However I decided to look at this section of the article, to determine whether or not I could gather any information from this section. I discovered that this section wasn't relevant to my research, based on this fact I decided to ignore this section of the article. Overall this article provided me with some useful information that I can use in the production stage of this project, e.g. the various techniques used to create 'Argo' (for example, strong use of suspense).
Tinker, tailor, solider, spy article-(http://www.okgazette.com/oklahoma/article-14060-tinker-tailor-soldier-spy.html).
This article is an analysis of the film 'Tinker, tailor, solider, spy', it provides the user with information about the film, e.g. plot. This article proved to be a useful piece of research, from reading this article I learnt that film makers can use a strong narrative to avoid including unnecessary action sequences. In a thriller high-octane action can ruin the message of the film, if the film was intenended to be a captivating thriller with a moral message, high-octane action will destroy the moral message included in the narrative. Therefore this article has made me reconsider the structre of my short opening sequence; if I decided to include unneccessary glamourised action I would forfit the narrative structre I am trying to create. Taking this into consideration I will ensure that the amount of action that I include is balanced, to ensure that I don't sacrifice the narrative. Overall this article has provided me with some essential information that I will use to create my short opening sequence.
Primary research-Marathon man
For my primary research I decided to analyse Marathon man, a thriller starring Dustin Hoffman and Laurence Olivier. I have produced a presentation to document my research, from the research I have learnt about the different layers that are used to make a high-quality thrillers. Furthermore I have discovered that special effects aren't always the best element to include in thriller films, Marathon man uses a strong narrative to entertain the audience, instead of high-octane special effects.
Institution research
Part of my research was to research an institution which has produced films on a professional level, I decided to choose the film production company 'Paramount Pictures'. I chose 'Paramount Pictures' because they are a prestigious company that has produced many high-quality thriller films, and therefore I thought that this company produced films similar to what I would like to achieve (e.g. Marathon Man). This research proved to be very useful, I have learnt about the film production and distribution processes which will both prove to be very useful when I produce my short opening sequence. I have included my presentation below:
Audience theories
As part of my research I have created a presentation which includes important theories which could potentially affect my short opening sequence. I believe that it is important to understand the theories and their applications in order to make my short opening sequence professional and successful. Having a greater understanding of the audience allows me to be able to make my short opening sequence appeal to my target audience more successfully, and therefore it is important to do this piece of research. My presentation is below:
Film research 3-'The fugitive'
This is the conclusive part of my research into existing thriller films, I decided to choose 'The fugitive because I believe it is a great example of what I would like to achieve with my short opening sequence. The films utilizes many conventional thriller techniques, I have incorporated these into my thoughts about my short opening sequence. I found this piece of research to be the most advantageous compared to the other case studies, mainly due to the fact that this product is very similar to what I would like to achieve. Therefore I have been able to gather a lot of information from this thriller product, which I will utilize in the production stage of this portfolio.
For the second part of my research into existing products I watched and evaluated the short opening sequence 'Concept Destrukt', this opening sequence fits into the thriller genre which makes it similar to the first opening sequence I analysed (BAIT). However, in contrast this opening sequence relies on graphic opening titles and therefore this opening sequence was very interesting to analyse.
Film research 1-'BAIT'
For my preliminary film I am going to produce an opening sequence for a film which fits into the thriller genre, I am going to research a number of opening film sequences (which fits into the thriller genre) that other students have produced. To do this I am going to look for existing opening sequences on YouTube, which other students have uploaded. One of the opening sequence that I discovered was called 'BAIT', I found that was an ideal case study for me to research because it's similar to what i would like to achieve. I produced a PowerPoint which analyses some of the shots used in the opening sequence and their various conventions, I have included this below:
